Pelmeni
'Пельмени' (singular: пельмень - pelmen) refers to traditional Russian dumplings. They consist of a seasoned minced meat filling (typically a mix of beef, pork, and sometimes lamb) wrapped in a thin, unleavened dough.
Pelmeni are a staple of Russian and Eurasian cuisine. They are boiled and typically served with sour cream (сметана), butter, vinegar, black pepper, or occasionally in a light broth. Traditionally, families would gather to make them in huge batches, freezing them outside during the Siberian winters as a convenient, long-lasting food source.
The word originates from the Permic languages (Komi and Udmurt): pel'nyan' (пельнянь), where pel' (пель) means 'ear' and nyan' (нянь) means 'bread' (literally, 'ear-bread' due to their shape). Indigenous to the Urals and Siberia, pelmeni were integrated into mainstream Russian cuisine around the 14th to 15th centuries. Their durability when frozen made them the ultimate survival food for travelers, hunters, and explorers.
